How old do I need to be to learn to drive? You must be 17 years old to learn to drive a car, and have applied for and received your provisional driving licence.
How many lessons will I need before I can take my test?
The number of lessons you need will depend on how quickly you learn. Everyone learns at a different rate.
Your progress will be recorded during each lesson and when we both feel you are a safe and confident driver, then you will be ready to take your test. There is no minimum number of lessons you must have.
When can I take my Theory Test?
You can take your Theory Test when you are 17 so long as you have your provisional driving licence. You don't need to wait until you have started your driving lessons, but it is fine if you do.
The test consists of 50 multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test. Both parts must be passed at the same time.
Once you have passed the Theory Test you have 2 years in which to take and pass the practical driving test.
What happens on the day of my driving test?
On the day of your test, you will have an hours lesson immediately before the test. We will then go to the test centre where you will go out for about 40 minutes with an examiner who will assess your driving over a variety of roads, complete a reversing manoeuvre and drive independently for some time either using a sat-nav or by following a series of road and traffic signs.
You also have the option to take your instructor with you on your test if you would like!
After the test, your instructor will drive you back.
